English Department Hosts Magical Realism Night

Magical Realism Night will enrich students' study of Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

On February 26, 2019, the English Department will hold a Magical Realism Night for students in IB and advanced English classes. The event, which will be held in Marshall Center, will accompany their study of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel Love in the Time of Cholera.

During Magical Realism Night, students will eat a Caribbean inspired meal, listen to a lecture prepared by teacher Pacho Gutierrez ’77 on the geopolitical atmosphere of Colombia, and participate in a tango lesson. The event will put Garcia Marquez’s Nobel Prize winning novel into context for students and help them consider the book’s impact.

“Magical Realism Night is a great opportunity for students to learn about the complexities of Colombian history and culture, and apply that knowledge to the literature they are reading,” said English Teacher Melaina Young ’93. “It’s wonderful to celebrate a seminal work such as Love in the Time of Cholera, which for many students is their first introduction to Garcia Marquez’s work.”
