In their first game of the season, the George School varsity girls’ field hockey team shut out Conwell-Egan High School 3-0. The first two goals of the game were scored by the Cougars during mad rushes at goal.
“I was very proud of the entire squad for their energy, consistent effort, never-giving-up attitude, support of each other, team play, and determination to succeed,” said Nancy Bernardini, head coach. “The girls played fast and aggressively, pounding Conwell’s goalie and defense with thirty-two shots on goal.”
Forward Izzy Robinson-Cloete ’20 scored the first goal in the sixteenth minute off an assist from teammate Annie Borovskiy ’20. The second goal, also scored in the first half with one minute left, was put in by tri-captain Betsy Gentner ’18 off an assist from midfielder Eva Kinnel ’20. The Cougars notched their third goal in the second half with Maia Finkel ’18 scoring from an assist by Betsy.
The defense did not allow their opponents a single shot on goal. Senior tri-captain Kate Klaver ’18, Eva, Emily Matson ’20, Juliette Jeffers ’18, Camille Drury ’19, and Mallory Fritsch ’19 all had solid games on defense. Two goalies split time for George School—Vanessa Baker ’19 and Susan Robinson-Cloete ’20.
The team’s next test is Tuesday, September 12, 2017 when the squad travels to Hill School for a 4:15 p.m. game.
