George School Math Team Continues Winning Streak

The George School Math Team is off to a great start at the beginning of the 2020-2021 math competition season. On Wednesday, October 17, the team beat Malvern Prep in the Philadelphia Math League competition 35-15. And 35 was the maximum score possible during that meet. Last week, the team beat William Penn 31-13.

“We have not skipped a beat from the spring when we ended the year with an unbelievable string of math results and international accomplishments,” said Kevin Moon, Math Department head. “In an early practice round, we began the defense of our first-place finish in the 2019 Philadelphia Math League competition with a victory over Westtown 34-31. Virtual moose points please!”

On Thursday, October 18, the team played in the opening round of the national Math Madness competition and beat a school in Missouri 38 (out of 40) to 20. This past week, the team defeated a Californian school 39 to 20.

During the 2019-2020 season, the team finished in 17th place in the Math Madness competition. They ranked 6th in the international Purple Comet competition of 212 schools in the small high school division in May 2020. The Purple Comet contest welcomed 2,194 teams from 53 countries. Finally, the Math Team scored an 11th place finish out of 310 in the international Trinity Math Contest (TrinMaC) this past June.

The math team members include Walter Chang ’23, Alex Chen ’24, Wilson Chen ’23, Jimmy Ding ’23, Forest Ho-Chen ’22, Ian Hopkins ’22, Zachary Kalb ’22, Jason Liu ‘22, Justin Liu ’21, Edwin Onyango ’21, Zachary Spangler ’22, Vinay Thulasiram ’23, Tommy Wang ’21, Wade Wang ’23, and Ellen Zhang ’21.
