George School Mathletes on the Prowl

The 2018-2019 George School Math Team was ranked twentieth in the nation.

The George School Math Team has come together for the start of a new academic season and are competing this fall in three different contests—The Philadelphia Math League Challenge, Math Madness, and Who Wants to be a Mathematician contest. Their results continue to impress.

With four wins under their belts, the Math Team is poised to do well in the new Philadelphia Math League Challenge. The team defeated four opponents and earned a perfect score of 40 on their last contest. Next up is the match against Haverford School on Wednesday, October 30, 2019.

The eight Philadelphia Math League member schools are Agnes Irwin, Baldwin School, Episcopal Academy, George School, Hill School, Penn Charter, Springside-Chestnut Hill Academy, The Haverford School, The Shipley School, and Westtown.

The preliminary rounds of the Math Madness competition are underway with the team winning its first three challenge rounds. The team is currently ranked thirteenth nationally. Bom Jindanuwat ’20 is ranked fifth nationally and Ta Somsirivattana ’20 is ranked second.

Last year, the team ended their Math Madness season 7-1, and were ranked twentieth among the more than 550 US high schools that competed. Team members Ellen Zhang ’21 and Justin Liu ’21 ranked among the top fifty out of 10,000 students.

Math Madness is a joint initiative between American Mathematics Competitions and AreteLabs and is one of the premiere math competition events in the United States. It is an online, team-based event that starts with four weekly preliminary rounds followed by a single elimination bracket tournament, styled after the March Madness basketball tournament for college teams.

Also new to the team’s schedule this year is the Who Wants to be a Mathematician contest sponsored by the American Mathematical Society. The competition is an online game in which high school students compete for cash and prizes by answering multiple choice mathematics questions. More than 5,000 students competed in the first round and three members of the George School Math Team qualified to move onto the second round— Justin Liu ’21, Bom, and Ta.

Math Team members include Walter Chang ’23, Wilson Chen ’23, Linglong Dai ’23, Yichun Ding ’22, Forest Ho-Chen ’22, Steven Gao ’22, Ian Hopkins ’22, Bom Jindanuwat ’20, Leon Li ’20, Jason Liu ‘22, Justin Liu ’21, Michael Luo ’22, Carol Lu ’21, Peter Qi ’23, Ta Somsirivattana ’20, Yousuf Sajjad ’22, Zachary Spangler ’22, Spencer Stockhammer ’20, Vinay Thulasiram ’23, Tommy Wang ’21, Anney Ye ’20, and Ellen Zhang ’21.
