Girls Basketball Clinches Quaker Cup

On Friday, February 9 the varsity girls’ basketball team defeated Germantown Friends School (GFS) 43-24 in the Quaker Cup Championship game.

Courtney Heffelfinger ’19 was first to score for the Cougars shooting the game’s first three-pointer. Lauren Hanna ’21 scored two three pointers and Kaliyah Myricks ’21 added to the first quarter’s total with a bucket around the hoop and a free throw to give the Cougars a 12-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, it was the defense that took control allowing only one basket the entire quarter. Co-captain Alexandra Long ’20 dropped in a three pointer, while Kaliyah went two for two from the line and put back an offensive rebound. Courtney dropped her second three pointer, putting the Cougars up 22-10 at the half.

The defense still had control in the third quarter keeping GFS to just five points, while George School scored eleven points in the quarter. Jennifer McArthur ’19, Alexandra, Kaliyah, Courtney, and Lauren each made baskets in the game’s third quarter. The final score of the game was George School 43, GFS 24.

The girls travel to Westtown for the first round of the PAISAA state playoffs on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at 4:00 p.m.
