Ellie Remus '25 and Maggie O’Dunne '26 Take GS Rowing to the National Stage

Though only in its second year, the GS Rowing program is already making waves on the national stage. Lightweight rowers Ellie Remus '25 and Maggie O’Dunne '26 — both racing at under 135 pounds — took on a challenge beyond their typical category, entering the openweight pairs event.

At the Mid-Atlantic Youth Championships, the duo delivered a standout performance, punching their ticket to the US Rowing Youth National Championships in Sarasota, Florida. Competing against heavier and experienced boats, they rose to the occasion. "Not only did it mean we got to compete against some of the best rowers in the US," they said, "but that we were a part of them."

At Nationals, Ellie and Maggie faced off against some of the fastest youth pairs in the country. After advancing through time trials to the C/D semifinals, they placed fourth in the C Final — finishing 20th in the nation.

Ellie has since graduated and taken her talents to the collegiate level, now rowing for Wellesley College (a top DIII program outside of Boston). Meanwhile, Maggie returns as a senior and second-year captain, undoubtedly preparing for another run at Nationals.

For a program that started just last year with limited equipment and a modest roster, qualifying a boat for Nationals is nothing short of remarkable. It speaks volumes about the dedication of its athletes, coaches, and supportive rowing families — and signals a bright future ahead. Reflecting on the experience, the pair stated, "for George School Rowing this is just the beginning — these are the first steps towards creating a program that empowers athletes to never give up and push past the standard."

Congratulations to Ellie, Maggie, and the entire GS rowing community on this incredible milestone!
