College Counseling

College Representative Visits. George School will host in-person and virtual visits from college representatives beginning Monday, September 11 through Friday, November 3. Seniors must sign up in Scoir to attend. Space is limited and preference goes to seniors. If juniors are free and want to attend a meeting, they must email Terry Tuttle to be placed on the attendance list. A list of visiting colleges will be posted via email.

College Visit Policy: The class absence must be approved at least two school days prior to the absence.

Seniors – may miss up to two class days before holiday break and two class days after holiday break to visit colleges.
Juniors – may miss two days of classes to visit colleges beginning in February.

To be excused from classes for a college visit, students are required to complete a “College Visit Leave Request” using REACH, and receive permission from College Counseling, their parent(s)/guardian(s), and the Attendance Supervisor Laurie Moyer, at least two school days ahead of the planned visit.

JED Foundation

George School is pleased to announce that we are partnering with The JED Foundation to create a more comprehensive approach to mental health promotion.

The JED Foundation is a non-profit organization that equips school communities across the country with evidence-based resources to create a culture of care in which all students feel seen and supported. JED provides schools expert support, evidence-based best practices, and data-driven guidance to protect student mental health.

JED will assist George School in assessing our community’s needs, developing a customized strategic plan to build on existing strengths, and implementing tools, strategies, and techniques that lead to measurable improvements in student mental health and a more connected community.

One of our first steps with JED is conducting a student survey to assess student attitudes, awareness, and behaviors related to mental health. More information about this survey will be shared closer to the date it will be conducted.

Communication and Public Speaking Party!

Students from the “Communication and Public Speaking” course will lead the community in a celebration of letting their lives speak through delivery of their extemporaneous speeches.

WHEN: Friday, October 6
WHERE: Walton Auditorium during Assembly (9:35-10:15 a.m.), and *during lunch on Red Square (11:35-12:35 a.m.)

Banned Books Week: October 1 – 7

Banned Books Week takes place on October 1 – 7 this year!

This is an important week not only for libraries, but schools and readers everywhere as it celebrates every individual’s right to read, encourages us to use our voices in a respectful and productive way to speak out against censorship, and supports equitable access to information for all.

This year’s theme is “Let Freedom Read!” and MDA library staff has prepared book displays to help highlight the 13 most challenged titles from 2022, as well as titles that have been banned over the years. Stop by and take a look this week—you might be surprised to see just how many familiar titles are included!

The Waghorne Academic Study Hub (WASH) is Open!

The Waghorne Academic Study Hub (WASH) is a tutoring center open to all students.

It is home to Math Help, the Writing Center, and to a peer tutoring program in a variety of subjects. It is open Monday to Thursday, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

WIN Weekend: September 29 - October 1

There’s a WIN day coming up on Friday, September 29. WIN Days are for students to rest, socialize with friends, visit colleges, and work on long-term projects in between terms. There are NO classes on WIN Days.

Boarding students may leave campus on Thursday, September 28 only after their last school obligations (academic, performing arts, and sports) are complete. If you live locally and have an obligation over the weekend, you may go home and return to campus over the weekend for your obligation.

Thursday: No Study Hall (Check-in at 10:00 p.m.)
Friday: Check-in at 11:00 p.m.
Saturday: Check-in at 11:00 p.m.
Sunday: No MFW. Check-in at the Deans’ Office by 6:45 p.m. Boarding students must be back on campus on time for Dorm Study Hall/check-in 7:00 p.m.

Trenton Van Information:

The van to the Trenton Train Station will be on Thursday, September 28 at 5:30 p.m.
Pick up at the Trenton Train station will be on Sunday, October 1 at 6:00 p.m.
Sign-up for the van by Wednesday evening, September 27. Enter this in your leave request and sign up in the Deans’ Office.

Classes resume at 8:15 a.m. on Monday, October 2 for the start of Term 2!

Spirit Week

Get ready for Spirit Week, scheduled for the week of October 8-14. Student Council is busy planning themed days fan buses to Westtown games, and more! The week will wrap up with a campus Green and White dance on Saturday night. More details to follow—stay tuned!

General Announcements for ALL juniors and seniors in IB courses

IB results for the May 2023 session were released back in July and we are proud to announce results, which maintain our standing as one of the top performing IB schools with an excellent diploma success rate! We look forward to this year’s upcoming exams!

EXAM DETAILS:

Students enrolled in IB courses are required to take IB exams. Junior and Senior IB Diploma Candidates have been registered for their subject exams.

Junior and Senior IB Course Candidates (students that are taking individual IB courses but are not full diploma candidates) have been registered for their subject exams and must go to the School Office to sign paperwork. Val Fusco (Registrar) will reach out to students directly.

The cost for each subject exam is $119 and the deadline for registration is November 1 after which there are no refunds and any changes will incur additional costs.

Students with financial aid are automatically granted aid on exams commensurate with their financial aid package. Questions should be directed to Mike Murray (Associate Director of Admission and Director of Financial Aid).

Students with learning accommodations must communicate with Evonna Bruner (Director of the Learning Center) and Kim McGlynn (IB Coordinator). Please note that IB will not guarantee the same accommodations offered by George School. All paperwork on learning differences and the request for inclusive access learning accommodations must be submitted to IB by October 1.

We are in need of 3-5 parents/guardians to help with the 70th Annual George School Cross Country Invitational on the morning of Saturday, September 23.

This is the PREMIER cross country sporting event in Southeastern PA. We need people to help guide runners on the course. For more details about volunteering please contact Mike Bailey.

To foster community between the school and our wonderful parents, Ginny Waller (Director of Parent Engagement) is hosting a pre-race gathering for volunteers and spectators on the Orton porch at 8:00 a.m. Stop by for music, coffee, tea, juice, and pastries. GO COUGARS!

Meet the Chef: Tim Gober

Tim has been with George School for over 15 years and brings with him many years of restaurant and catering experience. Tim shows his passion for food everyday, not only by creating all of George School’s menus, but by leading his team in making all recipes from scratch. Tim is dedicated and proud to be part of the George School community.

Learning Accommodations

If you believe your student might have a learning difference, please contact Director of the Learning Center Evonna Bruner to discuss procedures for assessing learning differences. Only documented learning differences are eligible for a “learning difference bulletin” at George School.

For similar accommodations on College Board or other standardized tests, the student will need to apply for such accommodations with the testing organization and adhere to their deadlines. Having a “learning difference bulletin” at George School does not automatically mean that the student will have accommodations on standardized testing. Contact Evonna to discuss how to apply for such accommodations.

Additionally, if students are seeking IB accommodations, they should also contact IB Coordinator Kim McGlynn. All paperwork on learning differences and the request for inclusive access learning accommodations must be submitted to IB by Sunday, October 1.

PGA Meeting

Parents/Guardians: Please join the Parent and Guardian Association (PGA) for dinner in the dining hall at 5:30 p.m. before its final meeting of the school year on Monday, April 17. The meeting will be from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the MDA Library Conference Room. Those unable to attend in person may join virtually via Zoom. The meeting link is on the Parent Portal.

Student Volunteers Needed for CAS!

Dear George School Students,

Do you remember the moment you said “yes” to GS?! For so many, attending the Celebration for Accepted Students (CAS) IS that moment. Every year, the Admission Office works to create an exciting, special, fun-filled experience for our newly accepted students… and we need YOUR help to make the 2023 CAS our best event yet!

This year, there will be two CAS days: March 30 and April 4.

Families will come to campus and attend programming throughout the morning and afternoon to get a sense of what George School is all about. We will need high-energy, dynamic, positive student volunteers to help families navigate campus; answer questions about life at GS; run icebreakers and other games; and so much more. If you are interested in being a Student Volunteer, please fill out this form at your earliest convenience.
