George School proudly presents Spring Awakening, a powerful and thought-provoking coming-of-age musical that has captivated audiences worldwide. Adapted from the 1891 German play by Frank Wedekind, the musical seamlessly blends alternative rock with a raw, deeply emotional exploration of adolescence, rebellion, and societal expectations. Through bold storytelling and an electrifying score, the production portrays the complexities of growing up, both physically and emotionally, capturing the struggles of self-discovery, academic pressure, and parental expectations. For George School’s theater program, Spring Awakening is more than just a performance. It embodies the school’s commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue and personal growth.
At the helm of this ambitious production is Mo, a beloved and visionary director who has led countless productions over her 24 years at George School. Known for her passion for educational theater that sparks conversation, Mo sees Spring Awakening as a vital opportunity to use art as a catalyst for critical discussions. “Frank Wedekind, the original playwright, believed that greater awareness and education were crucial for helping teenagers navigate this formative stage of life, especially after he lost two friends to suicide,” she shares. With this year’s theater theme centered on transformation, Mo believes the production is a chance for the George School community to engage with these questions on a personal level. “This musical is a mirror of our students and our community,” she explains. “It is a story about transformation, understanding, and ultimately, finding one’s voice amidst chaos.”

Why This Musical? Why Now?
One of the most compelling reasons for Mo and the team to choose Spring Awakening is its deep relevance to the George School community. The themes explored in the show include the lack of comprehensive sex education, the stigma surrounding mental health, and the overwhelming pressures of adolescence. Through characters like Wendla, who suffers due to her mother’s refusal to educate her about her body, and Moritz, who is crushed by academic and familial expectations, the musical sheds light on challenges that resonate with many students today.
Among these difficult topics, Mo highlights the importance of addressing teen mental health and suicide prevention, an issue that demands continuous attention:
“Statistically speaking, the numbers are heartbreaking. Awareness of what drives teenagers to such a desperate act, whether it is academic pressure, parental expectations, or an internal battle with self-acceptance, is critical…”
By tackling these subjects, the production emphasizes the need for open conversations, support systems, and greater awareness within schools and families. Mo also underscores the broader responsibility of adults to create a safe, understanding environment for young people during this turbulent period. “Helping both teenagers and adults understand the weight of this transitional phase is something we must actively commit to,” she asserts.
Yet, Spring Awakening is not just about hardship. It is about resilience, connection, and self-expression.
Music as a Form of Expression
Beyond its heavy themes, Spring Awakening stands out with its dynamic, rock-concert energy, offering a fresh and powerful way for teenagers to express themselves. “It was brilliant to frame this story in the style of a rock concert,” Mo explains. “It automatically makes it more engaging for younger audiences, allowing them to feel the raw intensity of the characters’ emotions.” The alt-rock score pulsates with frustration, longing, and defiance, bringing the inner struggles of the characters to life in an electrifying way. By combining music and movement, the production creates a visceral, immersive experience that mirrors the chaotic and exhilarating journey of adolescence.
Mo also highlights the essential role of humor in balancing the show’s darker themes. “There is humor in it. By no means do I want people to think, ‘Oh, I do not want to see that musical because it just sounds so dark.’ It is not crafted that way.” The exaggerated adult stereotypes, portrayed by just two actors, provide moments of comic relief, offering the audience a chance to laugh at the often misguided and out-of-touch perspectives of authority figures. “We can laugh at stereotypes,” Mo notes, “and I hope that viewers will connect with the teenagers’ experiences while recognizing, through humor, just how flawed and limiting some adult perspectives can be.”
A Thoughtful and Inclusive Approach
Recognizing the weight of Spring Awakening’s subject matter, the production team has taken deliberate steps to ensure the material is handled with care. A pre-performance assembly was held on January 31 introducing the show’s themes, providing students and faculty with an opportunity to engage in discussions ahead of opening night. “We want everyone to feel supported,” Mo explains. “This assembly is about creating a safe space where people can process these topics and decide if they feel comfortable attending the show.” Faculty members, including school counselors, are available to guide conversations and offer support throughout the production process, reinforcing George School’s values of openness and inclusivity.
Collaboration and Creativity Behind the Scenes
For the cast and crew, bringing Spring Awakening to life has been both a challenge and a deeply rewarding experience. Performing such emotionally intense scenes requires trust, vulnerability, and a supportive environment. Mo’s directing philosophy centers on collaboration and empowerment, ensuring that students feel comfortable, respected, and heard.
“It is about creating a space where everyone feels safe enough to explore the material while knowing they can step back when needed,” Mo emphasizes. She encourages students to voice their perspectives, shaping the production into a truly collective effort. “Some of the best ideas come from collaboration. A student cast member recently made an incredibly insightful suggestion, and I thought, ‘I did not even consider that, but it is absolutely spot on.’ That is the beauty of theater. It thrives on shared creativity and openness.”
The production also incorporates two adult cast members from the George School community, adding new layers of insight to the show. “They bring a different perspective, one that younger students may not have yet, and it has been valuable to hear their interpretations of the material,” Mo notes.

A Bold Yet Thoughtful Adaptation
In bringing Spring Awakening to the George School stage, the team has made carefully considered artistic choices to balance authenticity with sensitivity. Mo opted for a “clean version” of the script, omitting certain explicit language and reimagining sensitive scenes through interpretive movement rather than graphic staging. “For me, storytelling is far more important than using profanity just for shock value,” she explains. “Sometimes, what you do not show can be even more powerful than what you do.”
For students who may hesitate to engage with the production, Mo offers reassurance. “Theater is not just about performing. It is about discovering your voice, collaborating, and finding confidence in your creativity.” She encourages students to participate in whatever capacity feels right for them, whether on stage, behind the scenes, or as an engaged audience member.
A Must-See Event for the George School Community
As opening night approaches, excitement is building among the cast, crew, and school community. More than just a performance, Spring Awakening serves as a call to reflection and conversation, urging audiences to confront difficult truths while embracing the power of growth, resilience, and self-expression.
In Mo’s words, “This is not just a musical. It is an opportunity to engage with the world around us and to let our lives speak.”
