Sam Houser Shares Plans for the 2021-2022 Academic Year

Head of School Sam Houser shared this information in an email to members of the George School Community on Monday, May 24, 2021.

After consultation with George School’s Board leaders, our Pandemic Response Team, senior administrators, and examining the guidance of health professionals and agencies, I am writing to let you know that George School will require COVID-19 vaccination of all students and employees prior to the start of school in August.

Vaccines have been shown to be safe and effective at significantly diminishing the risk of infection and preventing serious illness should infection occur. Further, vaccines are becoming widely available in much of the world, and by all present accounts will only become more so this spring and summer. Given these factors, requiring the vaccine is the clearest and most effective tool we have to allow George School a safe return to its traditional ways of teaching, learning, and being in community.

We will accept all vaccines approved by the World Health Organization and/or the United States FDA or the CDC. If any international student is unable to be vaccinated before the start of school with an approved vaccine, they should plan to arrive at George School on Monday, August 16. Arrangements will be made for those students to receive an approved vaccine nearby. After vaccination, students will be required to enter quarantine while their immunity develops before being allowed full access to campus and interaction with peers. The length of the waiting period will be shared at a later time.

If present trends continue, we do not expect any domestic students to have an issue acquiring a vaccine.

Exemptions from this requirement will be granted for religious/medical reasons. Parents requesting an exemption for their child should contact Joellen Gillon, Director of the Student Health and Wellness Center, at jgillon@georgeschool.org. Employees should direct questions to the human resources department.

Our faculty and staff are busy now putting the final details on back-to-school plans, including travel/arrival information, and there is tremendous excitement and optimism about next year. Please look for a detailed calendar and programming information soon.
