“When I think of George School, I think of many adjectives—including global, rigorous, transformative, life changing, peacemaking, and world changing. It is no wonder we invited this group to join our community,” said Head of School Sam Houser as he welcomed 170 new students and families. “All of these adjectives apply to them—to you. But there is one above all that I think of when I think of this class: excellent.”
Sam shared these remarks as part of a welcoming address and panel during new student registration on Saturday, September 2 in Walton Auditorium. Other panelists included Ava Navarro ’18, Patrick Mahoney ’18, Associate Head of School Scott Spence, Parents Association President Virginia Loebel, and Dean of Students Erin Sio.
Sam noted that new students hail from eleven states including California, Georgia, Maryland, Montana, and Virginia and twenty countries including Canada, Ireland, Israel, and Ukraine. Combined with returning students, the George School student body represents nineteen states and forty-two countries.
Sam continued his remarks by sharing a few interesting facts about the class of 2021. “The Class of 2021 is a multifaceted and multi-talented bunch,” he read. “Among you are a winner of the Turkish Olympiad in New York for memorizing and reciting a Turkish poem; students who have already done service trips, including one I note to South Sudan; one student has already studied all of the languages we offer, and another speaks Chinese, French, Spanish, Farsi, and English. One of you is a cellist for the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, one comes to us from the American Boychoir School, and one has performed at the Arden Theater in Philadelphia. Two can solve a Rubik’s Cube in under thirty seconds—one second for each year it has taken me to try.”
During the first day of school assembly on Monday, September 4, Sam informed the crowd of students, faculty, and staff that he will continue to have Friday Open Office Hours between 3:00 and 4:30 p.m. Community members are encouraged to stop by Sam’s office and chat with him about any concerns they have.
Before dismissing students after Monday’s assembly, Sam announced that 2017–2018 is a very special one for George School. His announcement was proceeded by the premiere of Celebrating 125 Years at George School, a video announcing George School’s Quasquicentennial.
