George School held its annual Winter Concert on Sunday, January 28, 2018 in the George School Meetinghouse. The concert, which featured over forty students in the wind ensemble, string ensemble, and orchestra performed pieces directed by George School faculty. Students featured included Ryan Lyons ’19, Ike Osenberg ’19, and Michael Lazzaro ’18.
The arts block ensemble performed Moonlight Serenade by Glenn Miller, which was arranged by Ike. The lab band then performed (A Dark and) Silent Night by Franz Gruber, and Flash Flood by Chris Bernotas.
The evening of music continued with the wind ensemble’s performances of American Flourish by Robert W. Smith, Nathan Hale Trilogy (Intrada, Intermezzo, Finale) by James Curnow (conducted by Ryan), Sweet Sunset by Jan de Haan (featuring Michael as the oboe soloist), and Blue Ridge Saga by James Swearingen. The ensemble performances were directed by Steven Heitzer.
Steven loves being able to share his enthusiasm for music with his students. “I want them to care about every note, every measure, every phrase, and every piece as much as I do,” said Steven.
Performing in the concert was also a great experience for Michael and the band who enjoyed being able to share their talent and hard work. “My favorite part of being an oboist at GS is being able to express myself through music with all my friends and peers, and share that music with our community,” said Michael.
The string ensemble performed pieces directed by music teacher, David Nolan. These musical pieces included Concerto Grosso Op. 6 #8 by Arcangelo Corelli (arranged by Todd Parnish), Aus Holbergs Zeit, Op 40 by Edvard Grieg, and St Paul’s Suite, Jig & Finale by Gustav Holst. “I loved how much they listened to each other in the performance and brought the music to life,” said David. “Their passion in their playing makes my job fun.”
The evening concluded with the orchestra’s performance of Symphony No 4, 4th movement by Johannes Brahms (arranged by Vernon Leidig), and Russian Sailor’s Dance by Reinhold Gliere (arranged by Belisario Errante). These performances were directed by Karen Hallowell, director of the student orchestra.
The instrumental music students will perform again on Sunday, April 29, at 7:00 p.m. in the George School Meetinghouse.
