The George School varsity girls’ basketball team opened its season with a win in the Cougar Classic Invitational. The invitational pitted George School against Academy of the New Church in the first game, which they won 40 to 13. In the second game, George School faced Cristo Rey High School and won 44 to 32.

Varsity Head Coach George Long said his current team has a lot of potential with three new team members this year—Lauren Hanna ’21, Kaliyah Myricks ’21, and Nailah Campbell ’21.

“Our success really comes down to how hard the team will work in practice, learn the system, and implement it on game days. Right now, we are developing each player while creating a team. So far, the girls have been great,” George said. This win marks the first in the seventeen-year history of the competition.

One of the biggest scorers in the game was Captain Alexandra Long ’20, who had ten assists, five steals, five blocked shots, three rebounds, and eighteen points in the two games. Kaliyah scored fourteen points and pulled down fourteen rebounds in the first game, and had eleven points, and thirteen rebounds in the championship game. Claryn Troup ’19 pulled down six rebounds and scored eleven points in two games. Junior Courtney Heffelfinger ’19 scored eleven points in the championship game.

The team’s next game is Friday, December 8, 2017 at home against Princeton Day School.
