The varsity wrestling team has shown a tremendous amount of grit and determination this season, according to Beau Byrtus, varsity head coach. The young team is led by returning members Jason Chien ’18 and Ahmed Ahmed ’19 who have worked on building a strong foundation.
The team will be busy getting into the thick of their league play over the next few weeks. “We will be focused on refining our wrestling moves and paying close attention to cardio fitness,” Beau said. “We are a very physical wrestling team that likes to push our opponents throughout the duration of the match. Our goal is to push the pace of the match from beginning to end.”
Aidan Sheehan ’21, who is new to the sport, has been having a lot of success this season and says that the team is supportive and feels more like a family. “I have learned that I can push myself further than what my mind thinks I can,” Aidan said. “I have also learned to take advice from teammates and coaches when it is given because it will really help on the mat.”
Stand out key performers on the team this season include Jason and Conrad Vakili ’20. Izzy Robinson-Cloete ’20 continues to be a key player in the wrestling room as well. Ahmed is also having a breakout season, and has shown a lot of growth after attending the Penn State wrestling camp this past summer.
Beau has enjoyed coaching the team, and is proud of the development they have all demonstrated, especially their strong performance against a seasoned Abington Friends School earlier this season.
“The measure of success is not counted in wins and losses, but rather the strength of character,” Beau said. “The character that allows the athletes to persevere through the exhaustion of a grueling practice, or to find the energy to score in the closing seconds of the bout to win the match. This team proves every day that their depth of character is the foundation of this program.”
The varsity wrestling team’s next match will be against Westtown on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. at George School.
