A Fond Farewell to Debbie DiMicco ’72

This spring, the George School community will say goodbye to longtime teacher, coach, and Friend, Debbie DiMicco ’72, as she retires from George School.

Prior to rejoining the George School community in 1979 to teach French, Debbie taught in France after graduating from Swarthmore College. Throughout her George School tenure, Debbie has taught multiple levels of French, as well as Language Arts, ELL English, as well as various levels of literature and composition in the English Department, and also earned her master’s degree from Middlebury College.

In addition to her time in the classroom, Debbie has coached field hockey, track and field, and basketball. For a long stretch, Debbie was both the head coach of the varsity girls’ track team and head coach of the girls’ junior varsity field hockey team. Of her coaching experience Debbie likes to say, “I coached French and taught field hockey and hurdles—the object is the same; only the implements change.” Debbie cares deeply about the athletic experience at George School. If she wasn’t coaching, you could often find her cheering from the sidelines.

Putting a great deal of effort into professional development throughout her career, Debbie regularly attended IB conferences and workshops, foreign language pedagogy seminars, workshops on the use of technology in the classroom, and coaching clinics.

Debbie has held other significant positions over the course of her George School career including advising, Clerk of Faculty, Laramore Chair Holder, sabbatical recipient, Technology Investigatory Committee grant recipient, member the Adaptability Project, Service Learning Coordinator (for five years), Class Sponsor, France Service Project Leader and Co-Leader, local service project leader, and was a member of Community Chorus. She served in the dorms for eight years, too.

Debbie served on numerous and varied committees such as: Discipline Committee; Faculty Concerns; Educational Policies Committee; Retirement Committee; Compensation Committee; Nominating Committee; Hall of Athletic Honor Committee; and, the Strategic Planning Committee. Outside of the George School community, Debbie is a dedicated soprano in the Bucks County Choral Society.

Debbie’s sustained dedication and outstanding contributions to George School have enriched the school, its academics, and the community.

While teaching at George School, Debbie met and married her former colleague and fellow George School alum Bruce DiMicco ’75. They have one daughter, Gioia DiMicco ’07.The community will honor Debbie during a ceremony at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2021 of Alumni Weekend.
