Independent Service Learning Projects

Have a great idea? Wonderful! Independent service learning projects give you the chance to imagine your own service work. Not surprisingly, there are certain guidelines you must meet.

We want you to design a project that allows you to interact directly with the population whom you are serving. A proposal to “fundraise” to make a donation to a specific charity would not be considered.

Past independent projects have included working with Head Start, volunteering at a shelter for battered women, working in client care in hospitals, and building community gardens in Trenton. The only thing needed is a little imagination and the responsibility to follow through.

If you have an idea or need one, you are encouraged to discuss it with the director of community service. All projects must be preapproved by the Religions Department and submitted at least three weeks prior to the anticipated start date, or no later than mid-May for summer projects.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss these options further, please schedule a meeting with Service Learning Coordinator Meredith Baldi ’01.
