George School Math Team Takes First Place

The George School Alphas Math Team took first place in the Pennsylvania High School 1-1200 category with a score of 25 out of 30 on the Purple Comet Math Meet. Perhaps more impressively, the team tied for sixth place worldwide in the HS 1-1200 competition. The team outscored area competitors including Westtown, Princeton High School, The Haverford School, The Episcopal Academy, The Hill School, and The Pingry School.

“The level of difficulty of this test was quite hard. It began at around the AMC level, through AIME and is getting close to USAMO level of challenge,” said Kevin Moon, Math Department head. “I was really proud of all our competitors. Fantastic results!”

The George School Alpha Team included Ta Somsirivattana ’20, Wilson Chen ’23, Walter Chang ’23, Justin Liu ’21, and Ellen Zhang ’21—all members of the George School Math Team.

The Purple Comet! Math Meet is a free, annual, international, online, team mathematics contest designed for middle and high school students. It is sponsored by AwesomeMath. The 2020 contest included 2,505 registered teams from 53 countries. High school teams have 90 minutes to solve 30 problems.
