“Mind the Light” Logo Debuts

Art teacher Edna Speakman, who replaces Louise Baker, creates the “Mind the Light” logo based on a favorite phrase of Society of Friends founder George Fox. Now thought of as the school motto, it is shorthand for “The Light of Christ is within you. Listen and obey it.” The logo first appears on the October cover of The Ides (a combination student newspaper and alumni bulletin) and remains there until 1915. Though not officially adopted as the school seal, it continues to appear and disappear from George School publications and at some point makes it onto the school’s diploma, where it remains.
