Satchel Smith ’20

Trenton, New JerseyJefferson University
Satchel discovers important truths on a tennis court in Pennsylvania and a service trip to Japan.

Is there a class that made a big impact on you?

My most interesting class last year was South African and African-American Thought Leadership, taught by Marcus Ingram. In this class, we discussed the apartheid in South Africa and the effects of racism. It was a discussion-based class, so I got to hear everyone’s opinions of the situation. Overall, the topics are very depressing but necessary to know.

What lessons have you learned on a team?

Last year, I was on the varsity boys’ tennis team, coached by Pacho and Glenn. I played second doubles with a sophomore. We built a strong relationship that helped us reach the semifinals of the Friends Schools League. Throughout the season, I learned that perseverance and teamwork will help you succeed in not just tennis, but life in general.
