Varsity Equestrian Team Collects 15 Ribbons at IEA Regional Finals

Eleven varsity equestrian team students and four horses competed at the IEA Regional Finals at Jentri Stables on Sunday, February 23, 2020. The team finished in third place, just one point behind the second-place team, and collected fifteen ribbons.

In the team classes, Emma Huttemann ’20 placed third in the Open Flat, Taylor Williamson ’21 placed fourth in the Open Fences. Layla Afzal ’21 placed second in the Intermediate Flat and Molly McGovern ’22 placed third in the Intermediate Fences. Angelina Wong ’22 placed third in the Novice Flat and Leila Smith ’21 placed second in the Novice Fences. Ava Schaner ’23 placed third in the Walk/Trot/Cantor.

In the individual classes, Ella Kraut ’23 placed second, Emma placed fourth, and Dixie Hurst Blair ’20 placed seventh in the Open Flat. Ella placed third and Taylor placed fifth in the Open Fences. Layla placed third in the Intermediate Flat and Angelina Wong ’22 and Olivia Garrett ’23 competed in the Novice Flat. In the Walk/Trot/Cantor, Ava placed second and Jady Huang ’22 placed fourth.

In the Horsemanship test, Emma placed third and Layla placed seventh. The Schooling Rider was Olivia Hansbury ’21.

Ella and Ava qualified to compete in the Zone 11 Finals as individuals, however the event scheduled for March 24-25 was canceled to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Ella was also announced as a Reserve High Point High School Rider.

“Though the day was quite long, the students did a great job supporting one another and riding very competitively,” said Tiffany Taylor, varsity head coach. “We are absolutely thrilled with their riding. Everyone worked so hard over the fall and winter terms.”
