Varsity Girls’ Basketball Wins Three

The varsity girls’ basketball team notched its third win on Tuesday, December 17, 2019, defeating The Hun School 62-50. The Cougars beat Lawrenceville 48-38 on December 11 and Princeton Day School 51-12 on December 13 to bring their season to 3-2.

“George School’s march through Mercer County continues,” reported Rich Fisher for The Trentonian. “The varsity girls’ basketball team won its third straight—all against Mercer County teams—as it rallied from an eight-point first quarter deficit for a victory over The Hun School.

“Hun managed a 20-12 lead after one quarter thanks to 7-for-11 shooting before the Cougars rallied for a 32-31 halftime advantage,” said Rich.

“Aqua Withers Carello ’21 finished her two shots in the first quarter when the Cougars were struggling offensively,” said George Long, varsity girls’ basketball coach. “Lauren Hanna ’21 entered the game and immediately made an impact. On consecutive possessions, she spotted up the perimeter and nailed two three-pointers.”

Paiyton Penn ’22 also nailed two consecutive three-pointers and helped the Cougars score twenty points in the second quarter and take a lead into the half. Contributing to the comeback was co-captain Kaliyah Myrick’s ’21 eight rebounds and five assists. And as the second half began, Alexis Martinez’ ’21 collected eleven points and pulled down eight rebounds. Paiyton scored nine points in the second half to finish with a team high of nineteen.

“Led by Kaliyah’s twelve points and twenty rebounds, the Cougars held a 40-21 rebounding advantage,” said Rich. “Alexandra Long ’20 and Lauren hit consecutive threes to cap the run and apply the dagger.”

The Cougars play The Pennington School at home on Thursday, December 19, 2019, at 4:00 p.m. and will travel to Doane Academy in Burlington NJ on Friday and Saturday, December 27 and 28 for the Doane Academy Invitational. Both games are planned for an 8:00 p.m. start.
