George School Celebrates Black History Month

Students and Assistant Director of Admission Jordan Page celebrate Black History Month at the Sunday potluck.

George School joins the country in honoring the importance of Black history and the contributions of black individuals, not just during Black History Month, but all year long.

“It is not just a time to commemorate the past; it is a time to celebrate the beauty, joy, wisdom, and resilience of black people in this country and around the globe,” said Director of Diversity and Inclusion Rachel Williams.

Black History Month 2024 was themed, “African Americans and the Arts.’ UMOJA (George School’s black student affinity group) with support from Rachel and their adult sponsors Assistant Director of Admission Jordan Page and Assistant Dean Kim Bryant, invited the George School community to a month-long program filled with education, celebration, and joy!

50 Years of Hip Hop Bus Trip to Philadelphia

On Saturday, February 17th, students traveled to the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia to explore a journey through 50 years of art, music, and power of hip hop– learning its roots in Black History.

Meet the Greeks

On February 20th, multiple members of Black Fraternities and Sororities met virtually with students to share about their organization, the history of the divine 9, and how to  navigate the experience at Predominantly White Institutions (PWI) or Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).

Jazz Club: Tribute to Jazz with singer Grace Little

On February 21, the community was treated to a powerful performance by vocalist Grace Little during dinner at the George School Dining Room. Grace performed classic jazz ballads, and even included students like Zoe Aghoutou ‘27 in song!

Celebrate Black Inventors: Lunch and Learn

On February 22, Eric Woods hosted a Lunch and Learn about the many Black Inventors whose contributions have helped shape our lives.

Mixed Meet Up

Later on February 22nd, Students, faculty, and staff looking to connect with George School’s multiracial and multiethnic community joined in a celebration of diversity, intersectionality, and unity over desserts and conversation!

Black History Month Celebration and Potluck

On Sunday, February 25th, the community joined together in the Fitness and Athletics Center for an afternoon of Double Dutch, dancing, and amazing food. Elite Brooklyn Jumpers taught students and faculty alike how to Double Dutch while delicious food, made by Jordan Page and his family, was enjoyed by all!

On February 26, students were welcomed to a virtual evening with the Godfather of Hip Hop Architecture, Nathan Williams. As a Brooklyn-based artist, designer, educator, and researcher, Nathan shared his work and perspective with the community.
