Model UN Receives Recognition at AmeriMUNC Conference

George School’s Model UN club attended the AmeriMUNC Conference at American University February 2-4. About 900 student delegates from around the world attended the conference. This annual conference is organized by the American University Model UN team which ranks number one in North America. Thirty George School students participated in this interconnected simulation in the heart of Washington DC, which centered on the theme “The African Century,” with three students taking home awards.

Catherine Meurer ’24 was awarded Best Delegate in the six-way joint crisis committee playing Rui Miguêns De Oliveira. Sanajana Gollamudi ’25 and Emery Mooney ’25 each received honorable mentions for representing Benin in the UN High Commission on Refugees and South Africa in the Disarmament and International security Committee, respectively.

“This year, we had 12 students who have attended an in-person conference before with 18 new Model UN students getting their first experience as a delegate at a conference,” said Heather Mooney, history teacher and Model UN advisor. “It was exciting to see our returners actively and confidently engage in debate right from the start and it was fantastic to watch our new delegates jump right in and grow each day of the conference.”

Students reflected on their experience at the conference:

“I learned more about the importance of putting yourself out there and volunteering to speak in every moderated caucus possible. I realized that by going out of my comfort level I can truly have greater success and leave feeling content with my performance.”

“This was my first conference, so I listened a lot and I think I’m more prepared for next time. I need to work on my working paper and resolution skills. I had fun!”

“I learned a lot of useful Model UN skills, including speaking, thinking, and writing. Since this is the second conference I’ve attended, I am still in the process of learning and becoming a better delegate. I can feel a huge improvement after attending the conference.”

The club will host their first conference, GeoMUN, a middle school Model UN conference, on Saturday, April 13 at George School.
