Sharing Culture in Community

Themed Weekend Activities

Senior Pablo Herrera, a leader of the Latin American Student Organization (LASO), reflected on the intersection of individual cultures and community. LASO recently organized a weekend of activities for the George School community, and Pablo shared this reflection during Meeting for Worship.

George School has become my home away from home but that is not to say that it is always easy to be away from my family, my friends, and my culture. Other boarders may relate. I am currently 2,450 miles away from the very special place that I call home.

The meeting house was been decorated with piñatas made by community members during one of the activities this weekend. As many may know, this weekend has been dedicated to the celebration of Latin culture, my culture.  It has truly been a privilege to be able to express and share a part of me with this community.

Amazing food, colorful lifestyles, incredible music and a lot of fútbol are just small parts of the vibrant culture which I was so fortunate to be raised in. That’s why this weekend is so powerful—it makes everyone at LASO feel back home and that is all thanks to the wonderful people that form the George school community.

It has been said that members of the Latin community are some of the happiest people on earth, but I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to be born in Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, Ecuador, or as a matter of fact any other Latin country to enjoy life. Value your relationships and prioritize your personal satisfaction over anything. Honor the elderly and maintain contact with your ancestors that have left this world. But most importantly dance and sing all your issues away.

From the bottom of my heart I want to thank Amanda, Gio, Ana and Franklyn. You guys were amazing, be proud of yourselves and what you accomplished. To Ari, Shari and everybody else that made this weekend possible GRACIAS. I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we did.

Having said that, I invite everyone to reflect on the following query: what is culture to YOU?
