Students Attend MLK Teen Peace and Social Justice Summit

On Sunday, January 14, 2024, several George School students attended the 11th annual Bucks and Montgomery Counties MLK Teen Peace and Social Justice Summit held at Pennsbury High School West Campus. The event was sponsored by the Peace Center in Langhorne to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Stephen J. Tyson Jr., a musician and educator, was the emcee of this year’s event, which was open for students in grades 9-12. The summit featured inspirational speakers, student-led stories of their experiences, and meaningful and courageous conversations on racism. Resources were provided to support students and communities. Educators, parents/guardians, and community members were also welcome to attend workshops.

“The students joined many students from the Bucks County area in dialogue and reflection about peacebuilding,” said Rachel Williams, George School’s Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. “They had meaningful conversations about race, discrimination, and intolerance, and came up with recommendations for the schools, educators, and parents, that might help students thrive academically and socially.”

Anatalia Cambridge ’24, Muke Akume ’24, Altiana Lominy ’24, Lois L’Oiseau ’26, Halaylah Lewis-McGlothan ’25, Jesse Stephen ’25, Catherine Baptiste Sanders ’24, Zach Holmes ’24, and Antonio Lance ‘24 attended this year’s summit.

“The MLK Peace Summit was truly an eye-opening experience. It reflected a meeting of the minds; seeing students and teachers in the same room sharing similar concerns was powerful,” Zach Holmes ’24 shared. “Adults truly listened to students, and it was apparent that student feedback was met with genuine reception. As a result, students really led with candor, and the adults modeled active listening and compassion. Hopefully, the lasting result is that participants embraced the feedback enough to positively impact their respective communities.”

At the end of the conference, students were chosen to share their dreams and recommendations with the entire audience. “Many of our [GS] students were on stage, sharing what they learned from the day,” Rachel added. “We ended the evening with a pizza party at Pennsbury High School, and the adults and students shared in community.”
