The Virtual Classroom: A Glimpse of Life in Quarantine

When the students in Danielle Picard-Sheehan’s photography classes left for spring break, they never imagined that their assignments might turn into a reflection of the Coronavirus pandemic. With the move to remote learning, the students were asked to create a photo essay of eighteen images that investigated parts of their lives.

Student Activist Shelby Williams Speaks at The United State of Young Women

Shelby Williams ’21 spoke as a My School Votes Student Ambassador at The United State of Young Women, a virtual three-day event that was held from July 22 to July 24. The event was organized as part of a larger national effort focused on gender equality that grew out of the Obama administration’s White House Council on Women and Girls.

The Wise Prize for Distinguished Teaching Announced

The Wise Prize for Distinguished Teaching is an endowed gift from Brian Wise ’93 and his wife Nastaran. It will be awarded every two years to a faculty member to recognize sustained and distinguished teaching by faculty members whose demonstrated enthusiasm and excellence influences both students and colleagues.

Kaliyah Myricks ’21 Commits to Georgetown

Kaliyah Myricks ’21 committed to Georgetown University to play Division 1 Big East basketball for Women’s Basketball Head Coach James Howard. In her 2019-2020 season, Kaliyah averaged 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 assists as a George School Cougar.

Summer Fun at George School

Students, faculty, and staff are making the most out of their Summer quarantine at George School by participating in fun events around campus. They’ve enjoyed tasty treats like Bubble Tea and made their own Flatbread Pizzas in Marshall. Students can also stop by Marshall to watch movies with their classmates every week. Faculty and staff put together a tropical pool party in the FAC complete with pineapples, beach balls, and Hawaiian leis.

The Virtual Classroom: Intensive Biology

Intensive Biology students broke away from their screens and the boundaries of a traditional classroom to conduct a study of flower anatomy and the role flowers play in plant reproduction. One of the goals for the assignment was to offer an opportunity that was not dependent upon doing work on a screen.

George School Faculty Prep for Blended Instruction

While George School is planning to return to in-person learning in the fall, the faculty are still taking measures to be prepared for the possibility of a return to online/remote learning as the COVID-19 crisis continues. Director of Professional Development and Evaluation Meredith Alford ’01 put together a special professional development program for George School teachers to participate in this summer to help meet these needs.
