George School Celebrates 126th Commencement
Eleven members of the varsity volleyball team arrived on campus on Monday, August 21 to spend their last weeks of summer vacation getting ready for their upcoming season.
Almost twenty students arrived on campus Monday, August 21 to participate in the preseason program for candidates for the George School varsity girls’ soccer team.
Thirty George School students arrived on campus early to prepare for their upcoming season. Over the last two weeks, they have worked exceptionally hard and have been focused on both fitness and the tactical side of the game.
Dr. Sarah Dunphy-Lelii ’96 recently visited Uganda for a six-month research fellowship studying aggression in adolescent male chimps. For ten hours each day, she followed and observed 687 chimpanzees in the Kibale National Forest.
Christie Lenée has been performing since the age of four. A naturally born entertainer, she first hit the stage in Tampa, Florida with a song and dance ensemble called Entertainment Revue.
Last year’s squad finished only 3-5, but the team had a lot of challenges to overcome, including the retirement of longtime coach John Gleeson ’65. George Long, boys’ athletic director took over and will remain head coach for the upcoming season.
Prior to the start of each school year, George School hosts a weeklong International Student Orientation (ISO) for international students new to George School. Each incoming student is paired with an ISO student mentor, a rising junior or senior who will follow the student all year.
Tom Hoopes ’83, head of the Religions Department and Orton dorm at George School was featured recently in a QuakerSpeak video. Teaching Religion at a Friends School focuses on the Quaker ethos that are present in classroom conversations among friends schools.
Classes for the 2017–2018 school year officially begin on Monday, September 4, 2017, but many students will soon return to campus for the Academic Summer Program, International Student Orientation, preseason athletic programs, and leadership orientation and training.
